Banana Bay & Marathon Cruise

October 18-25, 2012
by

Banana Bay is a tropical little place tucked away in the Florida Keys.  It is a perfect cruise event to start the Season and five MBYC boats (My Turn, TenneSea Waltz, Wanderer V, A Blast and Too Many Wakes)  headed south across Florida Bay on October 18th to Marathon to spend six days in this beautiful little spot.  Accompanying them were the Whites in their land yacht to spend time in the marina resort followed by the Rapp’s who also stayed in the resort to join in on all the boating fun.
On October 19th the group rode down to Key West to have lunch with the MBCY boaters staying at the Galleon.  Everyone went over on the ferry to Sunset Key for a delicious lunch together.  The next day all the boaters gathered on TenneSea Waltz and Bob took off for a day trip to Holiday Isle in Islamorada.  The resort has been taken over by new owners who have made some great improvements.  The hotel and lobby are new; the marina has been landscaped with palm trees, fire pit lounges and picnic tables. They also have a restaurant with the first “Shula’s’ Hamburgers” where we all met for lunch.
Other terrific activities included all you can eat Yummy Pancakes on the dock compliments of “Jo”, a chicken/hot dog cookout in the resort’s new tiki huts for supper, a field trip back to Key West by some of the boaters to see the Headdress Ball Contest, dinner at the Fisheries’ Bar where the crab claws were $1.25/ea and lots of hours spent down at the pool playing Mahjongg or Pony Canasta.   It was great spending time with the Kernan’s, hearing their boating stories, meeting their best buddy “Bob” and a big Thank You for Dianne’s teaching everyone to play Pony Canasta down by the pool.
Unfortunately for us, hurricane Sandy decided to head our way, so almost everyone took off back to Marco a day early.  The Kernan’s went to Ft Lauderdale and TenneSea Waltz stayed down in Marathon for some marina work after the storm made its way up the coast.  We are all looking forward to the next good times together – Check your schedule and join in the fun.
