Fleet Captains Auction

February 18, 2013
by Cindy Brown

Sixty-four Marco Bay Yacht Club members and guests arrived for lunch at the Old Marco Lodge and Crab House on Goodland at 11:30AM on Monday, February 18th.  Some came to get a bargain on the nautical item(s) they needed and some came to get rid of those things they thought they needed and bought at the last auction two years ago.  Others came for lunch, fun and camaraderie, and almost everyone went home with something.
Prior to lunch many perused the items which were to be auctioned so they would be ready with their bids, while others visited with friends and enjoyed some Bloody Marys and wine.
Our auctioneers, Al Saunders and Al Rapp, who took their jobs so seriously that they even dressed alike, explained each item and kept the bidding going, sometimes ending with bids higher than the cost of the item.  Since the proceeds are donated to local boating organizations, everyone was very generous in their bidding.  Some people went home with things they have no idea what to do with.  Brent Cook kept the items coming to the auctioneers with explanations when needed and Commodore Marcia and Alex Orsolini were kept busy delivering items to the high bidders as well as raffle tickets for every $10 spent.  Betty Barter and Cea Horton did a great job keeping track of everyone’s tab and collecting the money afterwards.
After all items were gone, seven raffle tickets were picked and the winners awarded $50 each.  Winners were Paula Skillern (again?), Marcia Orsolini, Jack Barter, Dave Besuden, Ann Bagshaw, and Jim Mueller was the lucky winner twice.

The following local merchants generously donated items or services which were auctioned off as well: A-1 Fuel; Ace Hardware; Cedar Bay Marina; CJ’s On the Bay; Dry Clean & More; Hoot’s Restaurant; Intercoastal Marine Service; J&J Boat Detailing; Kretch’s Restaurant; Mango’s Dockside Bistro; Marco Canvas; Marco Movies; Progressive Auto Center; Red Rooster Restaurant; Sea Tow; Tow Boat US; Trapper Marine; Walker’s Marine; and West Marine.  Our sincere thanks go out to these merchants.

Several of our members went the extra mile and donated some homemade items to be auctioned off.  Everyone knows of the Orsolini Famous Meat Sauce (or gravy) and Betty Barter’s Delicious Fudge and Peanut Brittle and the bidding was brisk.  The Doggetts brought several styrofoam chests with bottles of beer left from the Thank You Party and we even had an anonymous donor who supplied two large boxes of white elephant items beautifully gift wrapped and topped with a lottery ticket.
When all the proceeds were calculated, over $3000 was available to donate to The United States Coast Guard Flotilla 95, Marco Island Power Squadron, and the Civil Air Patrol.
Fleet Captain Mike Brown would like to thank all those members who contributed items to the auction, all those who bought items, and all who helped out at the auction. Those members who procured donations from local merchants deserve a special thanks.  Without the participation by all, we could not have had such a successful auction.
