Marco Bay Yacht Club Circumnavigate Marco Cruise On Wednesday February 8th we had a very successful day boat cruise around Marco Island. We started on a gorgeous day with a very light south wind and 6” seas! 15 boats participated, each with several guests aboard.

We started as two groups, the North group lead by Chuck Hubscher left the top of the Big Marco River at 10 AM. They went south in the river to the Old Marco Lodge and Crab House where we met for lunch. The South group lead by yours truly left Caxambas pass at 10 AM and headed north on the gulf to the Big Marco River, there we proceeded south to meet up with the rest of the group for lunch. Both Chuck and I pointed out to our respective groups that the day markers in the Marco river change at the Jolly Bridge.

We had a relaxing, tranquil lunch on the deck overlooking Goodland Bay. We had a great group of 75 people for lunch! Following lunch we left as one group and headed south on the Marco River to Coon Key. Exiting the river we headed west in the gulf to Helen’s Key. Between Helen’s Key and Key Marco (Captain Horr’s Island) we continued west to “the picket fence”, where we turned north to the channel running just south of the houses along the south side of Marco.

The South group proceeded to their start point by Caxambas gas dock, while the North group proceeded out Caxambas Pass and headed north in the gulf to their starting point in the river. All 15 boats and 73 people (two arrived at lunch by car) completed the circumnavigation of Marco! Each boat will be presented a handsome trophy, at the February Monday Madness, to commemorate their trip.

We wish to thank all who participated, particularly the Captain’s of each vessel. John Kernan, our day boat Fleet Captain and Doug Baillie did a good job in thinking of this event. Chuck Hubscher and I thank you for your cooperation and participation in this very enjoyable day. Frank Mulligan, Commodore MBYC.
