First Mates Happy Hour
April 19, 2023

First Mates continue to enjoy a mid-month social gathering at a local establishment. This month we met at the Brewery for libations and conversation. Several men joined the fun after the girls finished their gathering for drinks. It is great that this event inspires the men gather for dinner. Thanks to Anna Hutchings for keeping our new Happy Hour tradition a fun time! Join the fun in May on 19 for the next gathering.

An Evening With Elton John
March 11, 2023

An Evening with Elton John

On March 11th we saw and heard The Rocket Man Show, The Most Authentic Elton John Tribute Show in the World! at Jewish Congregation of Marco Island.

We had 27 MBYC members in attendance with Cindy Brown and Linda Saunders bringing their daughters.
The evening started with 15 of us enjoying dinner and drinks at the Marco Brewery. Then off to JCMI where Judy Sacher had arranged reserved, preferred seating for all us so we could sit together upfront.

Back to the 70s! “Elton John” had the audience engaged with singing along to our favorite tunes. In addition, he told us the story of his time with working Elton John.

The music was great, the costumes were over the top, and the energy amazing. First song? Benny and the Jets.
Another great MBYC night!

Cruise to ‘Tween Waters
March 14, 2023

‘Tween Waters Cruise Trip Report

Our March 13-20 cruise ended up just to ‘Tween Waters Marina on Captiva. Included on
this cruise was Cookin’ (Brent & Susan Cook), Karine (Bob & Sandy LaMontagne) O Sea
D (Vern & Ann Graham), Divergent (Bill Schroeder) and Camelot (Alan & Linda Sandlin.

The ride up, via the Gulf, was in mostly pleasant seas, especially for Cookin’ that followed
in Karine’s wake. When we came into Redfish Pass all of a sudden Divergent popped up
like he had been a hidden submarine but we were happy to see him.

It was a pleasure to have the Sandlins join us on this cruise. It has been a long time since
Alan and Linda have been able to join us on an extended cruise so we enjoyed their
company very much for two of our three nights.

Dining options on Captiva are still very limited so for the most part we ate meals on the
‘Tween Waters property at Old Captiva House and also on our own boats.

This cruise was planned for four nights at ‘Tween Waters followed by three nights at Boca
Grande Marina but mother nature had a rough forecast for both sea conditions and three
days of stormy weather at Boca Grande. In consideration of that, we cut the seven-day
cruise down to three days, eliminating the Boca Grande stop and cut one day off the ‘Tween
Waters stop and headed home early.

The ride home turned out to be slightly worse than forecast but nothing we couldn’t handle
so we had a very successful, but shortened trip, and a great time enjoying ‘Tween Waters.

Bingo Night at JCMI
March 13, 2023

MBYC BINGO NIGHT AT JCMI

Fifteen MBYC members, daughters & friends met for a night of BINGO at the Jewish Congregation of Marco Island on Monday, March 13

JCMI fed us well, with kosher hotdogs, chips, and all the fixings. Dinner was rounded out with pickles, coffee, tea along with a cookie. At intermission, they served ice cream, cake, cookies with coffee and tea. Wow!

The tally after two plus hours of bingo, talk and lots of laughs; Dianne Kernan and Margi White were both winners. Betty Barter was the MBYC bingo champion, winning twice.

I’d say a good time was had by all.

Sarasota, St. Pete & Venice
Cruise Trip Report
February 13-24, 2023

The first stop on our February cruise was at Marina Jack in Sarasota where Cookin’ (Brent & Susan Cook), Karine (Bob & Sandy LaMontagne), O Sea D (Vern & Ann Graham), Little Suzy (George & Suzy Koprash) and Aurevoir Y’all (Mike & Jeanette Hale) docked for our annual four–night visit to this great marina.

While they were only able to stay with us for a couple of days, it was fantastic to have time with our newest members, George and Suzy and Mike and Jeanette. I guess we didn’t scare them off because they are both joining us again on our March cruise.

Our next stop was at the St. Pete Municipal Marina in St. Petersburg for Cookin’, Karine and O Sea D. We always enjoy this stop because it is right in downtown St. Pete and almost everything is within walking distance.

After three nights in St. Pete we waved goodbye to Vern and Ann as they headed back to Marco so Vern could catch a flight out of town. Cooks and LaMontagnes enjoyed a great dinner and a stop at Kilwins on the final night in St. Pete.

On Wednesday, February 22nd, Cookin’ and Karine left St. Pete for our final stop at the Crow’s Nest in Venice. We headed out of Tampa Bay into the Gulf for the 50 mile run to Venice in nice seas at about 26 kts.

A stop in Venice is not complete without dinner at The Crow’s Nest and lunch at The Soda Shoppe and we did both during these final two days of the cruise. On Friday the two of us headed back to Marco in nearly flat seas for a great end to a wonderful 10-day cruise.

Our next cruise is March 13 th to ‘Tween Waters in Captiva and Boca Grande for 9 boaters, including all 3 of our newest extended cruise members.

Captains Poker

MBYC hosts a Texas Holdem game most weeks within the winter season. There are about a dozen regulars and an occasional guest or new member prospect. The last game was hosted by our new member prospect IrvP. We now use real coins to make it easier to close out at the end of the game, but it is all small change. As P/C Frank Mulligan says “Where can you get this much entertainment for less than $10.” He also states that he has so many good friends from MBYC because of the boating and social activities. I have to agree – If you participate, you will make many good friends.

The best hand of the day. P/C Frank bet big on the straight only to get spanked by a pocket pair of 5’s. All the drama of WPT (World Poker Tour) and a huge payout of about $5.

It’s all a lot of fun and there are no ringers in the group. If interested in playing, please respond to the host listed in the regular eBlasts that are sent out. Games are often limited to 8 players. Games last for 2-3 hrs. in the mid afternoon.
