MBYC Dog Dayzz of Summer 4th of July Gathering
By Commodore Marcia Orsolini
Alex and I loved sharing our 4th of July with the best club members on Marco Island. Here are the ingredients that one needs for a successful 4th of July:
1. A great place to gather – There’s nothing better than Resident’s Beach!
2. A shelter from the sun (and wind and rain) – Get a big chickee hut, but be sure to secure it before 6 am. An extra shade canopy is a big help. (The Kernans brought theirs.) Be sure to bring red, white and blue decorations.
3. Good music, especially patriotic songs (Kate Smith’s version of “God Bless America” is a must) – John and Dianne Kernan brought their Bose speaker and music to this gathering.
4. Good food and cold drinks – We had various toppings for five different types of hot dogs from different parts of the nation as well as multitudes of yummy side dishes prepared by our great members.
5. Finally, great evening fireworks with friends and family to end the day – And if you are lucky enough to watch them on the Gulf of Mexico, you’re lucky enough!
We want to thank the following members for coming early to help secure the chickee hut and provide assistance in the setup: John and Dianne Kernan, P/C Bill Horton, P/C Joe Doggett and Sharon, R/C Charlie Skillern and Paula

“This was the most challenging course that I have played in years,” said Commodore Marcia Orsolini as she won the 2013 Marco Bay Yacht Club Mini Golf Invitational.” The Commadorable snatched the treasured Mulligan Funeral Home Trophy away from semi-professional Jim Lane in a nail biting sudden death playoff that thrilled the MBYC gallery.
Self-appointed MBYC Commissioner of Mini Golf, John Kernan commented that “This could be the last mini golf invitational since a judge has issued a ruling shutting down the course.” Club gossip has it that the MBYC is filing an amicus brief in support of keeping the course open. “Were we so bad that the course had to be shut down forever?” said former commodore Joe Doggett.
Leader board scores were posted by the Anzalones, Lanes, Skillerns, Doggetts, Sandlins, Thawleys, Landwaards, Orsolinis, Hennings, Rosenberg/Spell and D’Ann Brandt. The Brinkhoetters enjoyed the pre match dinner, but passed on the golf due to John’s injured paw.
And speaking of pre match cuisine, Dianne Kernan served a great dinner of pulled pork, roasted chicken, sides and two desserts. She is definitely a “two desserts” kind of lady. And the group was challenged by a 56 puzzle golf test that was won by the Doggett/Henning team with the Landwaards as runners up. The Doggett/Hennings won a copy of the movie Caddy Shack (which is hilarious) while the Landwaards got Caddy Shack II (which sucks).
Will there be a 2014 annual MBYC Mini Golf Invitational? “ It’s all up to the courts. And you know how the court ruled on Obama Care,” remarked shrewd political observer Brent Cook from his well-guarded Michigan compound.
Perhaps the only negative comments came from Tiger Woods. “I hoped that I would get invited. I hear that the MBYC has some really hot girls,” said Woods.
